JULY 2024 NEWSLETTER

July is Heating Up!

As we head into July and the summer heat, we are excited to be meeting some of the goals set out in our new strategic plan. We have added 2 part-time staff positions to the organization to help with the heavy workload – a Case Manager for our North County families and an Administrative Assistant to support our infrastructure needs. As we continue to form new partnerships with other referral sources, these positions are critical to our continuing success in being responsive to families and our partners.

We are pleased to announce that this month we received grants from The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, Rotary Club Goleta, and Altrusa Club of the Central Coast Foundation, Inc. We are grateful for their support not only of Hearts Aligned but of the community of families we serve!

We hope that you had a chance to review our 2023 Annual Report, highlighting our accomplishments and plans for the future, that was recently mailed out. We are proud to have made an impact in our community and to continue to serve clients throughout the county. You can see our Annual Report and our 990 on our website – located at the bottom of the home page.

We welcome new Executive Board Leadership – Board President Colleen Sitolini and Board Secretary Lucy Kohansamad!

Thank you all for your contributions and making a difference to families with critically ill children.

Gratefully yours,

Vivian Solodkin, Founder & Executive Director

Meet Edgar

Edgar was referred to Hearts Aligned from Marian Regional Medical Center. He was born without concern and went home. Four days later, he was in the NICU – his body was unable to control his sodium and potassium levels, a very serious and life-threatening condition called pseudo-hypoaldosteronism. Edgar was transferred to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera where he remained for 3 months while doctors tried to get his sodium and potassium levels stabilized. Subsequently, Edgar would return to the ER and to Valley Children’s Hospital 3 more times for stays that lasted both weeks and months due to the instability of his condition.

The family has suffered tremendously. Dad is the sole income earner and mom stays home with her two other children, ages 4 and 5. The drive between their home and Valley Children’s Hospital is 200 miles. Dad stopped working to be at the hospital with his son, sacrificing a steady paycheck.

With your support, Hearts Aligned provided rental assistance, diapers, gas and grocery cards to the family. We have referred the family to other local organizations – Mothers’ Helpers, LEAP, Unity Shoppe and The Starfish Connection – to help the family receive the most benefits as they navigate this difficult road.

Your donations go towards supporting families like Edgar’s and make a big impact in their lives. Please help us help these families by making a donation today.

New Board President

Colleen Sitolini is the new President of the Board of Directors.

Colleen joined Hearts Aligned in 2021 when founder, Vivian Solodkin, shared that she was starting a charity to help families with critically ill children. Colleen’s youngest daughter was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect (hole in her heart) at her 1-year check-up and had surgery to repair it at 17 months old at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. It was a difficult time for Colleen and her family.

When asked to join the Hearts Aligned Board of Directors, Colleen related, “I thought my skills would be useful, and having a daughter with a heart defect, I know what these families are going through.”

A few years after her daughter’s surgery, her daughter’s best friend had a kidney transplant at the same hospital. Her experience brought her back to her own family’s struggles with watching her daughter being wheeled into surgery. She knew she had to be in LA with the family for their daughter’s surgery.

“I reflected on that day when Vivian told me about Hearts Aligned. I had to be a part of it,” shared Colleen.

Colleen has over 30 years of experience in health information management, in acute care, long term care, ambulatory surgery, hospice and home health. She has experience in office management, information technology, and human resources. In addition, she brings credentials in health information management, coding, and privacy and security. She currently works per diem for VNA Health as a Certified Coder for Home Health.

Other volunteer positions include Girl Scout Troop Leader, Girl Scout Service Unit Manager, Dos Pueblos PTSA Communications Coordinator, Dos Pueblos Band Boosters Grant Writer, DPHS Band Boosters Dance Guard Liaison, and DPHS Volleyball Boosters Secretary.

Colleen has lived in Goleta for 18 years with her husband, Paulo, and their 2 daughters, Ariana and Katie.
