Xavier

Meet Xavier

Type 1 Diabetes, also known as Childhood Diabetes, is a disease in which the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (a hormone essential to regulating blood sugar levels), or stops producing it altogether. Type 1 Diabetes is typically discovered in children between the ages of 4 and 14. It is incurable, and results in a lifetime of needles, glucose monitoring and special diets. Diabetics additionally are at risk of contracting other autoimmune diseases, such as Multiple Sclerosis or Lupus.

Perhaps because Xavier had just turned 2 , Doctors didn’t recognize his symptoms until they became so severe that he was rushed to the ER, practically in a coma. The ER Doctor found Ketoacidosis, and diagnosed him with Type 1 Diabetes. He was immediately transferred to Cottage Hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).  Doctors there told mom that her little boy might not make it through the night. Chilling words for any mother.

Happily, Xavier finally began to stabilize. Meanwhile, in preparation for his homecoming, his parents had to learn how to manage his care. This unfortunately meant time away from work, without pay, for Mom and Dad.

Hearts Aligned and our generous supporters are working with Xavier’s family, providing financial support for some of their immediate needs, including food, gas and the auto insurance payment.
