Meet Lukas
Lukas and Lyam were twin boys born at 22 weeks gestation, 11 inches long and weighing just 15 ounces. Mom and dad were first time parents. Sadly, Lyam passed away 3 weeks after his birth which was heartbreaking for the family. Lukas’s lungs were underdeveloped and he was placed on a ventilator for oxygen and his future was uncertain. He struggled keeping his blood oxygen levels stable and received a number of blood transfusions.
Mom stayed by his side every single day, arriving early in the morning, going home in the afternoon and returning in the evening with Lukas’s dad. Dad has continued to work supporting his family. Hearts Aligned provided gas and grocery cards to the family.
After a few months, Lukas began tolerating food which was a big milestone for him. As with many premature babies, Lukas had Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), an eye disease that causes abnormal blood vessels to grow in the retina and can lead to blindness. Lukas underwent eye surgery and fortunately, the specialist came from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to Cottage Hospital to perform the procedure. The family was relieved that Lukas did not need to be transferred to Los Angeles. The surgery was successful!
Hearts Aligned helped the family with a referral to Mother’s Helpers for a baby swing, baby sling, clothing, diapers and wipes. Hearts Aligned purchased additional baby items that were needed including a bassinet, a baby monitor, bottles, blankets, and other items to make the transition home comfortable.
After 6 months in the hospital, we are happy to report that Lukas is home and doing very well!
Thank you for supporting Hearts Aligned to continue in our mission to serve local families like Lukas’s navigating the unimaginable.
Thank you for your support!
