Happy New Year!
Last year was our first full year operating as a nonprofit and we are so grateful for all of you.
Your support of our mission helped us to launch our operations, providing us the opportunity to support 35 families in Santa Barbara County.
We thank you for your donations, your willingness to help, and for the many words of encouragement. We are so excited to move forward in 2023!
For the past 18 months, we have been operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the Santa Barbara Foundation (SBF). Their partnership has been a key step in Hearts Aligned being able to provide immediate help to critically ill children and their families. Under SBF’s umbrella, we were able to use their Tax ID to begin accepting donations, and to provide financial grants to families in need. As of January 1st, 2023, we have become independent, with our own federal and state nonprofit 501(c)3 designation letters. The Santa Barbara Foundation provided us with valuable mentorship and support as we began our journey.
We are truly grateful for their partnership and look forward to honoring them at our Hearts to Hearts Valentine’s Luncheon on February 9, 2023, at the Cabrillo Pavilion.
We ended 2022 with over $40,000 in grants, $45,000 in individual donations, and $7,000 in corporate donations.
Goals for 2023:
  • Increase financial assistance to 50 critically ill children/their families
  • Hire a part-time Program Manager to work directly with our families
  • Establish new partnerships with other Healthcare providers
  • Implement our volunteer services for families
  • Develop important relationships with community/community leaders
  • Host our first fundraiser Hearts to Hearts Valentine’s Luncheon
Together we can do this!
We appreciate your support in all of our efforts and are only able to continue in our work through your generosity.

Daniel came into this world at just over 27 weeks’ gestation. Adriana went into labor and was quickly rushed from Santa Maria to the UCLA Medical Center. At just over a pound at birth, he needed to be fed through a nasogastric (NG) tube, his lungs were underdeveloped, and his right foot was pointing off to the side.
We received Daniel’s first referral from the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, and then from a Social Worker at UCLA. Both were looking for ways to help this family.
Once released from the hospital, Adriana began commuting from Santa Maria to Los Angeles a few times per week to see her premature baby and leave pumped breast milk at the hospital. The gas to make those trips was expensive and she would spend the whole day at the hospital before driving back that same night. To make things worse, she also had a one-year old son at home who very much needed his mom.
After 3 weeks at UCLA, Daniel was transferred to Cottage Hospital, making it a much easier commute, but still an hour of travel time. Gas prices had shot up tremendously and, while at Cottage, Daniel became anemic and received a blood transfusion. At the same time, he learned how to suck on a bottle and started to grow and thrive. The doctors continued to work with his foot and avoided surgery. After three weeks at Cottage Hospital, he was transferred to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria.
During this time, Hearts Aligned provided much needed gas cards to make the trip to UCLA and provided rental assistance as Adriana was got back on her feet. After eight weeks, in three different hospitals, Daniel went home, was reunited with his family, and was able to meet big brother for the first time!
Adriana expressed how unprepared she was for this event, having gone into labor so early in her pregnancy. Worrying about Daniel and her other son, took an emotional toll on her and she felt a lot of stress about life, money, and her family.
When Hearts Aligned stepped in to help, Adriana says,
I felt blessed during this most difficult time.”
Daniel and his family are one of the many reasons we are out in the community helping critically ill children and their families.

Our Hearts to Hearts Valentine’s Luncheon would not be possible without the generous donations and support of our sponsors. We would like to thank our Founding Presenting Sponsor, The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Foundation. Their spirit of generosity and commitment to the community has been impactful in all of the programs they support.
Ms. Teresa Sat, Foundation Director, shared with us:
“Giving back to the community has always been a tradition of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. Our elders taught us that a distinguishing characteristic of the Chumash people was our spirit of generosity. Today, the tribe continues with the Chumash tradition of giving.
Over the years, the tribe has partnered with hundreds of local groups, schools, and organizations in the community, and we continue to be dedicated to working with organizations like yours to enhance the lives of community residents. We are delighted that we are able to help with your fundraising efforts and wish you continued success with your program.”

We have only just started to scratch the surface as we reach out to other medical providers and gather referrals of low-income families who have a child with a critical illness. Our goal is to continue our work and increase services to more children and their families through:
  • outreach to more medical providers in Santa Barbara county
  • increase the number of critically ill children served
  • development of our personal/family support program (help with household chores, shopping, and light housework)
  • continuation of our patient/family advocacy (assistance to understand medical invoices, provider payments, diagnoses)
We appreciate your support in all of our efforts and are only able to continue our work with your generosity. It is our hope that you will continue supporting our work and join us in our efforts.
