Emilia

Meet Emilia

💔A newborn baby with a congenital heart defect

💔Life saving medication not covered by insurance

💔Unforeseen and costly moving expenses

💔Lost wages

💔Enormous travel expenses

A few of the challenges facing Emilia and her family.

Dr. Bilal Harake, Renowned Pediatric Cardiologist, referred Emilia to Hearts Aligned.

At just six weeks old Emilia underwent heart surgery at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital to replace her mitral valve. A few months later, Emilia’s heart rate soared and she was taken to back UCLA Mattel where they stabilized her and put her on new medication. Because of her fragile condition, Emilia endures weekly blood draws for monitoring by her doctors at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital.

Emilia’s medication, which helps regulate her heart beat and prevents blood clots, is unfortunately not covered by insurance, adding a costly monthly burden to the family’s budget. Furthermore, the family recently moved due to unforeseen circumstances. They struggled to obtain the deposit, and first and last month rent.

Meanwhile, Emilia and her family travel to Santa Barbara an hour from Lompoc each month for follow-up appointments with Dr. Harake and quarterly for appointments at UCLA.

Emilia will need another surgery to replace her mitral valve as she grows.

Hearts Aligned, along with our supporters, are working with this family by providing financial support with rental assistance, groceries, gas cards and household supplies to help them as they get back on their feet.
