SEASONS GREETINGS
As we end 2023, I want to thank all of our supporters for their generosity in helping us achieve our goals this year. This is only our second year fully operating and we have made big strides in moving Hearts Aligned forward because of your gifts and support.

Last year, we served 26 low-income families who have a critically ill child. We saw the need emerge and with a lot of hope, we set out in 2023 with the intent to double this number and provide direct financial assistance to 50 families. By June we were halfway there and as of this newsletter, we reached this goal and will surpass it by the end of the year. So far we have approved 50 families for assistance. Due to community support, we hired our first employee, our part-time Program/Case Manager, Sandra, who works directly with our families. In addition to working with Cottage Health, we began a new relationship with Dignity Health and Family Service Agency in Santa Maria.

A heartfelt thanks to the many foundations that supported us this year! Without you we could not have served so many families.

A Story of Community Coming Together
One of the families we are working with in Santa Maria is a single mom, Anna, that needed to get her son, David, to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara for an emergency situation (but not life-threatening). Anna does not drive nor does she own a car. She called her cousin for a ride but he was working late and could not take her. She asked some neighbors but no one was willing to make the drive to Santa Barbara.

Anna contacted our Program Manager, Sandra, to see if we could help. Sandra called a local Santa Maria social worker but she didn’t have any leads at that time. Shortly after, the social worker called Sandra back and said she mentioned to one of her clients that there was a mom in the area looking for a ride to Santa Barbara. The client of the social worker has a special needs child. Yet, she volunteered “I will drive that mom and her son to Cottage Hospital. I know what it is like not to have someone available to drive you to the hospital.” She had been in that situation herself and all she requested was help with gas money.

Sandra received approval from Anna to share her address in order to get the ride to Santa Barbara. The next day, Sandra met up with Anna at Cottage Hospital to deliver a gas card to Anna’s driver. This is when she discovered it was another family Hearts Aligned was working with, Catalina (daughter Liseth)! The 2 moms did not know each other but when Catalina heard the struggle of Anna trying to get a ride for David, she knew she had to step up and help because she had similar experiences. Since that day, Anna and Catalina have become good friends.

It is truly heartwarming when our community comes together to help each other. This experience is a wonderful example of our Vision:
Every family with a critically ill child becomes part of a supportive and caring community.
