A Grateful Heart
When we began our journey to help low-income families with critically ill children, we knew we were taking on a tremendous endeavor. Our goals have been to educate our community about these neighbors and friends, to work with healthcare providers in order to receive referrals from them, and ultimately, to provide financial assistance, family support, and advocacy during the most difficult time in a parent’s life.
None of this is possible without your generosity and willingness to give. We are profoundly grateful for your understanding around what we are doing, and your incredible ongoing support of our mission.
On February 9, 2023 we held our first fundraising event, the Hearts to Hearts Valentine’s Luncheon. We had hoped for a good event, but it turned out to be a tremendous success, and one that far exceeded our expectations.
We raised over $140,000!!
The donations raised from the event helped us to move forward in hiring our first staff member, a bilingual Program Manager who will work directly with the families we serve, help expand our outreach to more medical providers, and ultimately serve more of our community (read more about Sandra below). We want to thank you for your continued support and commitment to the families we serve.
We have also been busy serving our community and are currently working with 15 new families, in addition to continued work with many families from last year. We have increased awareness around our work through meetings and partnerships with other agencies, including the IV Youth Project, Mother’s Helpers, CommUnify, CenCal Health and Family Service Agency, who either supplement or complement the work we are doing.
Thank you all for helping to make a difference in Santa Barbara County. We appreciate you and hope you will continue to support us this year and in the years to come.

RECAP: 2023 Hearts to Hearts Valentine’s Luncheon
We held our first fundraising event on February 9, 2023 at the Cabrillo Arts Pavilion. The event was co-chaired by Brigitte Welty, David Edelman, and Vivian Solodkin.
The Hearts to Hearts Valentine’s Luncheon was a great success! The Master of Ceremonies was the ever-dynamic Janet Garufis, Chairman and CEO of Montecito Bank and Trust. Hearts Aligned honored the Santa Barbara Foundation as our fiscal sponsor for 2021 and 2022, and for their charitable support to the community over many years.
The luncheon featured a silent auction with donations including everything from Dodgers’ Opening Day Tickets, a silk Gucci Scarf, Wine Baskets, to a Surfboard. With something for everyone, the silent auction alone raised over $10,000!
Janet was inspirational during the paddle raise as she announced an anonymous donor would pledge $35,000 if the audience could match it. She called on friends and colleagues and helped Hearts Aligned raise over $52,000 and, with the match, brought us over $87,000. Along with donations from those that could not attend, ticket sales, and sponsorships we raised over $140,000! WOW!!
Thank you all for your generous gifts!
We cannot thank our Sponsors and Underwriters enough! Your generous support was vital in us having such a successful event! Thank you for making a difference in our community!

Sofia seemed to be a healthy baby when she was born at Marian Hospital in Santa Maria, but quickly began having medical issues. She had been vomiting, not passing stools, and her stomach became distended. At just two days old, she was transferred to Cottage Children’s Medical Center in Santa Barbara, and was diagnosed with a bowel obstruction. Undergoing two operations (which included cutting out a section of her intestine), Sofia has a scar across most of her abdomen and a colostomy bag for bowel elimination. Although she is improving, it may be another six months until her intestines are able to function properly.
Sofia has a two year-old sister that her parents returned home to every night. Her father was able to take paid family leave, but the payments have not come through yet since filing for the benefit four weeks ago. The expense of driving back and forth (over 120 miles a day) has been extremely hard on the family and has taken a toll on their vehicle. During the heavy rains, mom and dad were unable to drive down to Cottage Hospital because the tires on their vehicle were bald and unsafe to drive under those conditions.
Since receiving the referral from Cottage Health’s Social Worker, Hearts Aligned has provided the family with a set of four new tires, gas, and grocery cards. Mom was hoping to co-sleep with Sofia before they discovered her illness and didn’t have a separate crib or bassinet for her, so we were able to refer the Sofia’s family to Mother’s Helpers who are assisting with a crib/playpen and special car seat for Sofia.
Sofia was recently discharged and is now at home, but the family continues to struggle with her care which includes changing a colostomy bag and ongoing financial assistance. Their car needs new brakes for their car, and continued support with gas and grocery cards as they have not seen any benefits from Paid Family Leave. Hearts Aligned will continue to work with this family to help them through these most difficult times.
You can help Sofia and her family, and other families that are also struggling with having a critically ill child by making a donation HERE today.
Thank you for your kindness!

Meet Sandra Padilla
Program Manager at Hearts Aligned
|
Sandra started her career at the Family Service Agency as a Family Advocate. She worked with families facing a variety of issues, such as child abuse, at-risk teenagers, domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health concerns, and financial difficulties. She conducted assessments of families’ needs, provided crisis intervention services, helped families develop and implement treatment plans, collaborated with other professionals, and provided ongoing support and follow-up services.
For 18 years, Sandra worked as a researcher and administrative assistant at UCSB for a Professor that supported research on child-abuse prevention. She worked with parents of children who were identified at birth as a medical risk (example: born premature, or with disabilities or respiratory problems, etc.). She helped parents model appropriate interaction skills and teaching techniques with their children and collaborated with other agencies and service providers for additional assistance for families. This work significantly lowered the incidents of abuse for families in at-risk situations.
Why did you choose to become part of Hearts Aligned?
After learning about the Hearts Aligned mission, I just knew that I wanted to be part of the organization. As a volunteer, I wanted to have the opportunity to build relationships with others who share their passion for service. Volunteering gave me an opportunity to acquire experience, improve skills, and connect with other resources.
Working for Hearts Aligned allows me to personally assist families in need and offer them the assistance they require. Another reason I chose to work for Hearts Aligned is the sense of fulfillment and purpose that comes with working for a cause greater than oneself. Knowing that your work is making a difference in the lives of others can be deeply rewarding and fulfilling. Finally, working for someone who helps critically ill children provides an opportunity to work alongside like-minded individuals who share a passion for helping others and making a positive impact in Santa Barbara County.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to spend time with family and friends, go for walks, and explore nature when there is an opportunity.
Is there anything you want to share with our community?
I just want to say ‘Thank you’ for your contribution to Hearts Aligned. Your donations have made a significant impact in the lives of these children and their families who are going through a difficult time. Your generosity has enabled us to continue our mission of improving the lives of these children and their families during some of their most challenging moments. A small act of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of families who are struggling financially.
